Monday Musings + Marinara Sauce

1. Rabbit, rabbit!

My college advisor and psychology professor would always start class with this intro if it was the first day of a new month. Apparently saying “rabbit, rabbit” the first thing in the morning on such a day is good luck.

Regardless, I LOVE October, and couldn’t be happier that today is the first day =).



2. On Saturday, John and I met up with some friends at one of their lake houses in CT.

Despite the overcast, cool, and slightly damp weather, we had a great time hanging out, taking a boat ride around the lake, huddling around the fire pit (well done, guys!)…

… and of course roasting marshmallows for s’mores!

Good times.



3. I managed to stay up for the Dexter premiere last night (10:00 is past this pregnant lady’s usual bedtime) but couldn’t muster the energy to watch Homeland (as though laying on the couch burns energy… ha).

I’m definitely excited for this season of both shows!! If you’re not watching them, you really should catch up with previous seasons. SO good!



4. The packaging of one of my favorite cheeses just got a makeover!

Although I did receive this block of Cabot Pepper Jack Light & a block of Sharp Cheddar Light gratis from the company, I am a regular consumer of their light cheeses and definitely recommend them to all of you health-conscious cheese lovers out there.



5. The bloggers behind The Back Burner are sharing recipes featuring tomatoes this week. Given the dreary weather we’ve had in New England lately – and the upcoming colder months – I thought I’d stick with a comforting recipe featuring canned tomatoes: my homemade Marinara Sauce.

  1. MY coworkers and I used to say Rabbit every 1st of the month. We made it into a competition and I actually just got a text first thing this morning from them with the words “RABBIT” all over my phone. :) Love that little tradition.

  2. I’m a huge fan of Cabot cheeses too, but I don’t think I’ve ever tried the pepper jack kind–I guess I’ve been too infatuated with their sharp white cheddar :)

  3. every once in awhile, I think about a silly incident in my life that dates back 44 years ago – the day someone told me if you want to have good luck all month long then say, “rabbit, rabbit” before you say anything else as of a fraction of a second after midnite on the last day of any given month; there is no reason for it; it’s just silly as can be but I really do appreciate the memory and the pause for thought – LOL (lots of love) – by the way, love your website – discovered you totally by accident while looking for a recipe in which I can use just freshly slow-cooked butternut squash, steamed kale, onions, and roasted red peppers; haven’t found it as of this writing, but I will…
