Better Butter

You guys know I rarely feature product reviews on the blog. This is not a dig at bloggers who regularly review products; it’s just a decision that I made when I first started Healthy Food For Living. I’m making an exception with this post, as I am psyched to share a new find with you!

Today I bring you a review of a product that I purchased and have been thoroughly enjoying. I first read about My Better Butter on Elina’s blog. I was intrigued by the lower-calorie, but completely natural, peanut butter spreads and decided to order a jar of each flavor (Maple Pumpkin, Honey Nut Banana, & Nutty Chocolate Chip) to sample the complete line. Marina, the founder and owner of My Better Butter, thoughtfully tossed in a jar of the newest flavor (Cinnamon Raisin) - added to the product line just after I placed my order :).  Thanks, Marina!

Before we get to the tasting, I want to mention some facts about these tasty nut butters.

  • Each variety has about half the calories of other nut butters (between 100 and 110 calories per 2 Tbsp serving)
  • The fat content ranges from 6 grams (Cinnamon Raisin) to 7.8 grams (Nutty Chocolate Chip) per serving; none of the peanut butters have a saturated fat content that exceeds 1.5 grams per serving
  • In terms of sugar, none has more than 5.2 grams per serving
  • Every nut butter lists peanuts as the first ingredient
  • No chemicals, additives, preservatives – nor any artificial ingredients – make their way into the peanut butters
  • All of the peanut butters come with a “best by” date, and require refrigeration since fresh ingredients are included; they can all be frozen and safely thawed in the refrigerator
  • Marina sources local ingredients and businesses for the company. The honey comes from Two Gander Farms in Berks County, PA. Peanuts, jars, and other ingredients are purchased from businesses located in Pennsylvania as well.

Impressed? Yeah, me too. Now let’s do a taste test!

Maple Pumpkin

Ingredients: peanuts, pumpkin, maple syrup, cinnamon, ginger, all spice, nutmeg, sea salt

Nutritional stats:

  • Serving size: 2 Tbsp (32 grams), 9 servings per container
  • Calories per serving: 104
  • Calories from fat: 64
  • Total fat: 7.2 g; saturated fat: 1 g
  • Cholesterol: 0 mg
  • Sodium: 4 mg
  • Total carbohydrates: 8 g
  • Dietary fiber: 1.5 g
  • Sugars: 5.2 g
  • Protein: 3.8 g

I was most excited to try this flavor, given my adoration of all things pumpkin. The mousse-like texture and pumpkin flavor instantly reminded me of pumpkin pie filling, but the subtle maple flavor keeps the peanut butter from being overly sweet. The warm autumnal spices are pronounced, but do not completely overwhelm the peanut  flavor. Smooth, luscious, lightly sweetened, and deliciously flavored, the Maple Pumpkin Better Butter set the bar high! I will be enjoying this dolloped on top of oatmeal, pancakes, and waffles.

Honey Nut Banana

Ingredients: peanuts, banana, honey, sea salt

Nutritional stats:

  • Serving size: 2 Tbsp (32 grams), 9 servings per container
  • Calories per serving: 102
  • Calories from fat: 63
  • Total fat: 7.o g; saturated fat: 1 g
  • Cholesterol: 0 mg
  • Sodium: 3 mg
  • Total carbohydrates: 7.9 g
  • Dietary fiber: 1.6 g
  • Sugars: 4.6 g
  • Protein: 3.8 g

The Honey Nut Banana Better Butter tastes just like a peanut butter, banana, and honey sandwich – minus the bread. The prominent flavor is banana, but the mild honey sweetness and rich peanut flavor are not out-shined. The obvious use for this peanut butter is in a sandwich, but it would also be great spread on graham crackers and/or fruit.

Cinnamon Raisin

Ingredients: peanuts, pumpkin, raisins, agave nectar, cinnamon, sea salt

Nutritional stats:

  • Serving size: 2 Tbsp (32 grams), 9 servings per container
  • Calories per serving: 105
  • Calories from fat: 654
  • Total fat: 6.0 g; saturated fat: 1.5 g
  • Cholesterol: 0 mg
  • Sodium: 58 mg
  • Total carbohydrates: 12.1 g
  • Dietary fiber: 2.4 g
  • Sugars: 4.2 g
  • Protein: 3.3 g

My favorite of the bunch! The newest addition to the Better Butter line, the Cinnamon Raisin is downright delectable. Plump and chewy raisins accent the cinnamon-spiked peanut butter, which is perfectly sweetened with agave nectar. Most of this will probably be eaten straight from the jar, but it would also be delicious spread on cinnamon raisin toast and/or served with crisp apple slices.

Nutty Chocolate Chip

Ingredients: peanuts, pumpkin, cocoa, agave nectar, canola oil, chocolate chips (cane juice, chocolate liquor, non-dairy cocoa butter), sea salt

Nutritional stats:

  • Serving size: 2 Tbsp (32 grams), 9 servings per container
  • Calories per serving: 109
  • Calories from fat: 70
  • Total fat: 7.8 g; saturated fat: 1.5 g
  • Cholesterol: 1 mg
  • Sodium: 5 mg
  • Total carbohydrates: 8.5 g
  • Dietary fiber: 1.7 g
  • Sugars: 5 g
  • Protein: 3.5 g

The Nutty Chocolate Chip Better Butter is the most dessert-y of the four. Rich, but not overly sweet, the fudge-y chocolate peanut butter is dotted with tiny chocolate chips that add a nice textural contrast. How fantastic would this be on s’mores?!

Overall

If you couldn’t tell, I was an instant fan of My Better Butter! Each flavor is unique and delicious. You can definitely tell that peanuts are the main ingredient in each, but the fruit and spice additions add great depth of flavor. The consistency of the peanut butters is thick and the texture is smooth – rendering each spoonful incredibly satisfying. Despite the need for refrigeration, the chilled peanut butters are soft, light, and easily scoop-able. Although I won’t be replacing my beloved peanut and almond butters with these jars, they have definitely earned their place amongst my ever-expanding nut butter collection.

My Better Butter is available at these stores in the Philadelphia area, or online for purchase. You can also peruse some recipes using the peanut butters here.
